Mayako Kubo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mayako Kubo ( Japanese 久保 摩耶 子 , Kubo Mayako ; born December 5, 1947 in Kobe ) is a Japanese composer who has lived in Europe since 1972.

Life

After initial training as a pianist, Kubo studied composition in Vienna in the 1970s with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati , Erich Urbanner and Friedrich Cerha . In 1980 she continued her studies with Helmut Lachenmann . In 1985 she moved to Berlin, where she has mostly lived since then.

Kubo has emerged primarily as an opera composer; in total her work comprises around 120 compositions. Her subjects come preferably from Japanese literature and mythology . Her first opera Rashomon is based on a story by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke , which Akira Kurosawa also used as a template for his film of the same name . "First performed at steirischer herbst in Graz, the opera deals with facets of the concept of truth in a fascinating way." The second opera, Osan , was inspired by a play by the samurai poet Chikamatsu Monzaemon . But current events are also reflected in Kubo's oeuvre. Most recently, after the devastating Tōhoku earthquake in Japan in March 2011, she wrote the Sanriku songs based on poems by Meiko Matsudaira .

Her music "is designed for mutual understanding despite all its rebellion. In many of her pieces the behavior of people in social contexts is a theme." While her models often come from the Japanese culture, she musically follows the tradition of European modernism. “Composition as an expedition into the disordered and the unknown, apart from aesthetic purity and stylistic unity.” Kubo's work is characterized by stylistic versatility combined with biographical continuity and a predominantly dramatic, expressive musical language.

She is co-founder and artistic director of YACOB , the Young Asian Chamber Orchestra Berlin.
