Martyn Brabbins

Martyn Brabbins (born August 13, 1959 ) is an English conductor.

Brabbins studied composition in London and then conducting in Leningrad with Ilya Musin . In 1988 he won first place in the conducting competition in Leeds . He then conducted most of the major orchestras in England, but also the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Brabbins also made a name for himself as a conductor of chamber music ensembles and opera conductor. He conducted a. a. at the Deutsche Oper Berlin Der Prinz von Homburg , Franz Schrekers Der ferne Klang at the Opera North , David Sawers From Morning to Midnight and Michael Tippett's oratorio A Child of Our Time at the English National Opera , Dallapiccolas Volo di notte and Il prigioniero at the Frankfurter Oper (2004), Alexander Knaifels Alice in Wonderland at De Nederlandse Operaand Péter Eötvös ' Tri Sestri at the Hamburg State Opera .

From 1994 to 2005 he was a permanent guest conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and has since been Artistic Director of the Cheltenham International Festival of Music. He also conducted the London Sinfonietta , Ensemble Modern and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and was the conductor of the Music of Today series from 1999 to 2004.

His repertoire includes the great romantics of the 19th century as well as Edward Elgar , Benjamin Britten and William Walton . Above all, he has made a name for himself as a specialist in new music . He led u. a. Compositions by James Dillon , Jonathan Lloyd , James MacMillan , Minna Keal , Mark-Anthony Turnage , Michael Finnissy , Carsten Hennig and Harrison Birtwistle .
