Anthony Payne

Anthony Payne (born August 2, 1936 in London ) is a British composer , musicologist and music critic.

Life

Payne wrote his own compositions as a student. He completed his music studies at the University of Durham . Since then he has been working as a freelance artist, music and university teacher. Payne is married to the soprano Jane Manning, with whom he founded the Jane's Minstrels Ensemble in 1988 .

Payne's compositional work is heavily influenced by the English romantics of the early 20th century such as Edward Elgar , Frederick Delius and Vaughan Williams .

His breakthrough came in the mid-1960s with his Phoenix trade fair. Numerous commissioned works followed. In total, Payne has presented over 50 compositions in various genres as well as several musicological writings, including the works of Arnold Schönberg and Frank Bridge . Payne also works as a music critic for the British daily newspapers The Times , The Daily Telegraph and The Independent , among others .

Payne caused a stir in February 1998 with his version of the previously unfinished Third Symphony by Edward Elgar. On August 2, 2006, his 70th birthday, Elgar's march Pomp and Circumstance No. that was reconstructed and completed by Payne was also presented at the BBC Proms . 6 world premiere.
