Wim Henderickx (born March 17, 1962 in Lier, Belgium ) is a Belgian composer of contemporary classical music. He lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium .

life and work

Wim Henderickx is Professor of Composition and Music Analysis at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium) and the Conservatory of Amsterdam ( Netherlands ). He studied at IRCAM in Paris and at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague as well as at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music .

Wim Henderickx has received major international awards, including the “Jeugd - en Muziekprijs Flanderen” (Belgium) and the “International Composition Price for Contemporary Music” in Quebec, Canada. In 2002 he was laureate of the Royal Flemish Academy (Belgium), in 2006 he was nominated for the Flemish Culture Prize.

He composes chamber music , orchestral music and operas , all of which have been published by “CeBeDeM” in Brussels. His style is characterized by the influence of ethnic music from non-Western cultures, with influences from Indian classical music and Eastern philosophies occupying a special position in his work.

A CD of his Three Ragas was released with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Grant Llewellyn. His opera Triumph of Spirit over Matter (2000) was commissioned by the Muziektheater Transparant and premiered at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie . His 2003 opera Achilles was premiered at the Flemish Opera, it has also been translated into Danish and was performed several times in Copenhagen in 2006 .

In 2006 Wim Henderickx realized two music theater productions: Een Totale Entführung (in cooperation with Ramsey Nasr) and Olek shoot een beer (in cooperation with Bart Moeyaert). Both productions toured successfully through Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2007 Wim Henderickx composed Canzone for voice and piano for the semifinals of the Concours Reine Elisabeth, Brussels .

After traveling through India and Nepal, Wim Henderickx began working on his Tantric Cycle , a series of compositions inspired by the Orient. The Seven Chakras (2004) for string quartet, Nada Brahma (2005) for soprano, ensemble and electronics and Maya's Dream (2005) for oboe and ensemble form the first three parts of the cycle. The fourth part, his opera Void / Sunyata (2007) for 5 singers, ensemble and electronics, was commissioned by the Muziektheater Transparant and was performed in Antwerp (Belgium), Zurich (Switzerland) and Stavanger (Norway). In 2009 this opera was also performed in Bruges (Belgium), Zwolle and Rotterdam (Netherlands), each time with Wim Henderickx himself as conductor. The fifth part of the cycle Disappearing in Light (2008) is written for mezzo-soprano, viola, alto flute and percussion. The sixth part is his orchestral work Tejas (What does the sound of the universe look like?) , It was premiered by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jaap van Zweden in Antwerp and Bruges.

His 2003 composition Confrontations for Western and African percussion was performed again in Mechelen (Belgium) in 2009 . The CD "In Deep Silence - Modern Guitar Music" contains two works by Wim Henderickx for guitar.

Since 1996 Henderickx has been resident composer at the Muziektheater Transparant, Antwerp. For years he was a timpanist at the Nieuw Belgisch Kamerorkest , the later Beethoven Academie of Jan Caeyers . Henderickx was commissioned by this orchestra to compose Le Visioni di Paura (1990). This was followed by orchestral works a. a. for the Brussels Philharmonic , the Nationaal Orkest van België , the Catholic University of Leuven and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) .

Since August 2013, Henderickx has been Artist in Residence with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) , later the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra . In March 2016 a new double CD was released with this orchestra. Henderickx's compositions are published by Norsk Musikforlag in Oslo.

His work Blossomings for choir, trumpet and electronics premiered in London in 2016 with the BBC Singers and Marco Blaauw . In 2018 his cello concerto Sangita premiered with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the soloist Jean-Guihen Queyras . The orchestral work Enigma VII was premiered in 2019 under Martyn Brabbins at the BBC Proms .
