Juha Mannerkorpi

Juha Toimi Tapani Mannerkorpi (born June 28, 1915 in Ashtabula , Ohio , USA ; † September 15, 1980 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish playwright and novelist.

Mannerkorpi influenced modern Finnish literature in both the epic, lyrical and dramatic. His features, columns and radio plays for Finnish radio also found their way into German broadcasters.

Some of the narratives became operatic subjects performed in Finland and later in Germany. These include "Avain" (the key), for which Mannerkorpi rewrote a short story for the libretto. The opera depicts delusions of an alien invasion that assaults a resident of a modern city. In 1982 and 1984 "Avain" was also performed by the Hamburg State Opera.

Kalevi Aho adapted in his opera Ennen kuin me kaikki olemme hukkuneet (Before We All Drowned) Juha Mannerkorpi's radio play, in which the hopeless story of a woman who drowns herself is told.

Mannerkorpi received the Finnish National Prize in Gold in 1958.
