Markus Brier (born July 5, 1968 in Vienna ) is an Austrian professional golfer . He played on the European Tour from 2000 to 2012 and has been on the European Seniors Tour since July 2018 .

Life

Brier's father worked as a teacher at a commercial academy , which Markus Brier later graduated from, his mother was a tour guide between Austria and Italy before she became a beautician.

His parents took him and his three older brothers to the golf course of the GC Vienna in Freudenau early on (1976) , where he was tutored by Ossi Gartenmaier . In those years golf was still a marginal sport in Austria.

After attending the commercial academy, Brier studied business administration at the Vienna University of Economics , graduated with a master's degree and ventured into professional business in 1995. The first years on the Challenge Tour and the Tour School were tough and quite destitute. His fourth season, 1999, could have been the last of his career - instead it was his last on the Challenge Tour. With four podium places, he made third place in the year-end ranking and for the first time earned a tour ticket for the European Tour .

Brier achieved a great success in 2004 at the prestigious WGC World Cup in Seville, when he and his partner Martin Wiegele achieved 5th place for Austria. After the first day, the two were still in the lead.

At the Austrian Open 2006 the Austrian got off to a dream start, scored a hole-in-one on the first day on hole 11 , won a car for it, and won his first title on the big one in a sovereign manner - after every day of the tournament in the lead Trip. At the end of the 2006 season Brier achieved 49th place in the European Tour Order of Merit , his best result to date. He also won his second title, the 2007 Volvo China Open , by a large margin. He ended that season with a 32nd place in the money list ( European Tour Order of Merit ) and was the best German-speaking golfer.

Brier has set itself the goal of getting into the European Ryder Cup line-up, which is the traditional duel between Europe and the USA. The call to the continental European selection at the Seve Trophy 2007 was his previous highlight in that direction. With three out of five possible points, Brier was one of the best in the field.

At the end of 2012, he missed qualifying for the European Tour for the first time in 13 years. In November 2013 he announced his temporary resignation from the professional tournament scene.

In June 2014, Brier was presented as the new Players Coach by the ÖGV .

Markus Brier has been married since 1998. The two have a son (* 1999) and a daughter (* 2006) and live in Vienna.
