Juri Gilbo (* 1968 in Leningrad ) is a Russian violist and conductor , and since 1998 artistic director and chief conductor of the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg . He is also a member of the Gershwin Quartet .

Career

Juri Gilbo was born in 1968 in what is now Saint Petersburg, the son of a scientist and a doctor. He received his first music lessons at the age of four and initially devoted himself to the violin and viola . His studies took him to the St. Petersburg "Rimski-Korsakow" State Conservatory and then to the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in the viola class of Tabea Zimmermann . He studied conducting and orchestral conducting with Luigi Sagrestano. He made his debut as a conductor in 1996 and then performed successfully with various orchestras across Europe.

In 1998, Juri Gilbo took over the position of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg . Since then, Juri Gilbo has been working constantly with world-class soloists such as Nigel Kennedy , Mischa Maisky , Vadim Repin , Sir James Galway , Edita Gruberová , Fazıl Say , Giora Feidman , Martin Stadtfeld , Sergej Nakariakov , Gábor Boldoczki , Nikolai Tokarew , Lilya Zilberstein , Michael Barenboim , Ute Lemper , René Kollo , Eva Lind , Gunther Emmerlich , Deborah Sasson , Otto Sauter , Matthias Schlubeck , Dmitri Hvorostovsky , Zhang Hai'ou and Richard Galliano and has made guest appearances in the most important European concert halls and at numerous renowned international festivals.

In the last few seasons he has been engaged as a guest conductor with many orchestras, including a. the Camerata Danzig (Poland), the State Chamber Orchestra Minsk (Belarus), the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn , the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra .

In 2002 he was a member of the jury of the Louisiana International Piano Competition (USA).

The artist's intensive worldwide concert activities are supplemented by the studio productions. His CD with works by Carl Maria von Weber , which was released by SONY MUSIC in 2009 , was awarded the “Editor's Choice” by the renowned British magazine Gramophone .

Juri Gilbo lives with his family in Frankfurt am Main .
