The Leipzig Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is an active German symphony orchestra based in the city of Böhlen near Leipzig . It is the symphony orchestra of the districts of Leipzig and Northern Saxony .

Background and story

The orchestra is also supported by the city of Böhlen, where the orchestra also has its regular rehearsal and concert venue in the Böhlen Culture House. It was founded in 1963 as the State Orchestra of the Leipzig District . Until 2011 it was called the Westsächsisches Symphonieorchester , previously from 1992 to 1997 the Westsächsisches Philharmonie . It markets works of symphonic popular music under the name German Symphonic Pops Orchestra .

The orchestra works closely with the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig and the "Franz Liszt" University of Music in Weimar to train future orchestra musicians, singers and conductors. The Leipzig Symphony Orchestra regularly hosts master classes in conducting, for example in 2011 with Vladimir Ponkin (Russia), Kenneth Kiesler (USA) and Kurt Masur .

The orchestra's chief conductor in the 2018/19 season was Nicolas Krüger, who, however, resigned his position in 2019. Previously, this position was held by Karl-Gerhard Seher, Rainer Kluge, Günter Neidlinger, Horst Neumann , Ruben Gazarian (1999–2002), Markus Huber (2003–2009), Frank-Michael Erben (2009–2015) and Wolfgang Rögner (2015–2018 ).

The orchestra's repertoire is broad. It stretches from classical romantic and modern orchestral works about opera , operetta and musicals to symphonic light music . Chamber music ensembles such as the string quartet , the wind quintet and the brass ensemble Saxonia brass complete this extensive range, which has appeared on several CDs.

Concert activities

The Leipzig Symphony Orchestra is the only professional symphony orchestra in the cultural area of ​​Leipzig that has a decisive influence on Saxon musical life with over 100 concerts a year. The orchestra also performs outside of the cultural area, for example at the Usedom Music Festival , the Darß Classic Nights , on the Flower Island of Mainau, the Berlin Waldbühne as well as in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig and the Berlin Philharmonic . A long-term cooperation existed with the Theater an der Rott in Eggenfelden . Trips abroad have taken the orchestra to Poland , Bulgaria , the Netherlands , Switzerland , Mexico , Italy and South Korea .
