Horst Neumann (conductor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horst Neumann (born August 1, 1934 in Böhmisch-Leipa ; † August 22, 2013 in Leipzig ) was a German conductor .

Live and act

Neumann was born in Bohemia in 1934 . After training at a Hermann Lietz School, he studied conducting, piano, orchestral and choral conducting at the University of Music in Berlin , which he graduated with honors in 1959.

In 1964, after various engagements, he became permanent guest conductor at the radio in Leipzig and in 1967 chief conductor of the famous Leipzig radio choir.

With the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig , well over a hundred records and radio recordings were made in collaboration with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan , Karl Böhm , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Carlos Kleiber , Giuseppe Patanè , Kurt Masur , Herbert Kegel and many others.

In 1971 Horst Neumann became conductor of the Leipzig Radio Chamber Orchestra and in 1974 deputy chief conductor of the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In 1977 he became chief conductor of the Leipzig Radio Philharmonic, which he developed into an important symphonic orchestra.

The concert series "Magic of Music" became one of the most popular in the concert life of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig thanks to the innovative program selection and the collaboration with world-famous soloists. Neumann succeeded in engaging the still very young Anne-Sophie Mutter for the first time in the GDR and the Leipzig Gewandhaus for the opening of the “Magic of Music” series with Beethoven's violin concerto . The rarely played piano concerto by Ferruccio Busoni with the pianist Francois-Joel Thiollier , the male choir of the Leipzig Radio Choir and the Radio Philharmonic was performed in this concert series. Soloists such as Cyprien Katsaris , Peter Schreier , Theo Adam , Edith Wiens , the Kontarsky brothers , Lucia Aliberti , as well as world-famous choral ensembles such as the Leipzig Thomanerchor , the Dresden Kreuzchor , the Slovak Philharmonic Choir in Bratislava and the Rundfunkchor Leipzig many times were guests of this concert series.

Outstanding were the television productions of Joseph Haydn's oratorios The Seasons and The Creation with the Radio Choir and Radio Philharmonic Leipzig under the baton of Horst Neumann.

In 1984 Horst Neumann was appointed Artistic Director of the Philharmonia Chorus London. This activity led in concerts and record productions to close musical collaboration with conductors such as u. a. Carlo Maria Giulini , Bernard Haitink and Mstislaw Rostropowitsch .

In 1988 Horst Neumann was appointed professor and "Director of Choral and Choral Symphonic Studies" at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in 1989 he was made an "Honory Member" of the Royal Academy London.

From 1988 he was also a permanent guest conductor of the symphony orchestra and the choir of the North German Radio in Hamburg and Hanover. Concert tours have taken him several times to Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Norway, Czechoslovakia, the states of the Soviet Union, China, as well as to the Echternach Festival in Luxembourg and the Athens Festival, where he successfully performed Gustav Mahler's 3rd Conducted the symphony in memory of Dimitri Mitropoulos . A cycle of all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies brought Neumann several times to Mexico City .

In addition to the traditional repertoire, Horst Neumann conducted a large number of world premieres in collaboration with composers such as Hans Werner Henze , Luigi Dallapiccola , Luigi Nono , Benjamin Britten , Krzysztof Penderecki , Witold Lutosławski , György Ligeti , Edgar Varèse , Paul Dessau , Hanns Eisler , Edisson Denissow , Augustyn Bloch , Siegfried Matthus , Udo Zimmermann and others. The record productions of Hans Werner Henze's song cycle Voices, Luigi Nono's Epitaph's on Garcia Lorca and the recording of Hanns Eisler's complete works attracted international attention .
