The City Church of Brandis is a Protestant church building of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony in Brandis near Leipzig in the Leipzig district .

history

The Evangelical City Church in Brandis was originally a Romanesque choir tower church, which was expanded at the end of the 15th century. In 1570 the bridal hall and probably the sacristy were added. The nave of the hall church has a flat roof , the tower hall is vaulted with a groin , the choir has a reticulated vault .

The first documented mention of the Church of Brandis goes back to the year 1121. Remnants of the masonry of the nave and the tower crossing still date from the Romanesque period . Romanesque plaster remnants can be found on the eastern side of the tower in the roof truss area; a small Romanesque window on the south side of the nave was uncovered during the church renovation after 1961.

The chancel and sacristy date from the late Gothic period, around the second half of the 15th century. On the north side of the sanctuary is a sacrament house, next to it an epitaph with a portrait of a child in a spiritual robe, probably Wolf Ditterich von Korbitz.

The transept on the south side of the tower dates from the 16th century. The locked patronage crypt lies under the extension. On the east side of this youngest extension (bridal hall) there is an epitaph for a Bohemian exile who died in Brandis in 1681. In 1637 and 1696 Brandis experienced two major city fires. In 1633 325 people died of the plague. Around 1700 the interior of the church was refurbished with an altar, pulpit, patronage box and organ, mainly through donations from patronage Krafft Burchhard von Bodenhausen. In 1732 the church was redesigned in Baroque style : an octagon with a Welscher dome , tower ball and weather vane was built on the tower block . In 1741 a clock was installed in the church tower, which still exists today and is now operated electrically. The font dates from 1886.

The dates of the most important construction and maintenance measures on and in the Brandis Church are: 1927 installation of the gas heating, 1961–1967 exterior renovation, 1962 restoration of the organ, 1967–1971 interior renovation, 1984 electrification of the bells, 1992–1993 tower renovation, 1994–1996 roof truss renovation and new roofing as well as 1997–1999 exterior renovation.

Brandis Church has been Evangelical Lutheran since 1529.

present

The interior renovation began in October 2019; the last update took place between 1967 and 1971. The lighting, the loudspeaker system and part of the electrics are to be replaced, the heating to be expanded and the interior and exterior doors to be repaired. A renovation of the floor is planned for the bridal hall, and the walls, gallery and benches are to be repainted. The work should be completed in 2020. The total costs are estimated at 400,000 euros, the parish has launched a fundraising campaign for this purpose.

In 1705, the almost 80-year-old Leipzig organ builder Christoph Donat built an organ for the Brandis Church. It has two manuals and a pedal . The instrument has a special value in terms of music history, as it shows the transition from early baroque to high baroque and is the oldest two-manual organ with twin windchest in Saxony. Over the past 300 years, changes and repairs have been made to the organ. In 1962 there was the penultimate major repair, including the relocation of the pedal mechanism behind the organ, which was carried out by the Leipzig organ builder Hermann Lahmann.

Around half of Christoph Donat's original inventory has been preserved and was revised, repaired and partially supplemented during the restoration work by organ builder Georg Wünning from Großolbersdorf from 2006 to 2007. The bellows on the church floor for the wind supply was repaired in the same period. In order to restore the full sound of the organ, in addition to the nine original stops by Donat, five stops from Lahmann's time were reinstalled. The rededication took place on the second Advent 2007 with a festive church service and an organ concert.

The current disposition is the result of numerous rearrangements. About half of Donat's pipework has been preserved. The pitch is G sharp 1 (448 Hz). The disposition is as follows:

I main work C – c 3
1. Coarse 8th'

Bells

The peal consists of three bronze - bells : they were (h 'with the sound) in the years 1483, cast in 1785 and the 1927th The latter two were cast in 1955 (because the big bell had a crack and the sound of the middle bell was supposed to be changed) by the Schilling family of bell foundries from Apolda - they have been sounding with the tones f sharp 'and a' ever since.
