Life

Rheinwald studied agriculture in Hohenheim and Berlin, received his doctorate in Hohenheim in 1928 with a dissertation on Württemberg forest soils and then worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Plant Nutrition at the Hohenheim Agricultural University (today's University of Hohenheim ). From 1933 to 1938 he worked at the Prussian agricultural experimental and research institutes in Landsberg an der Warthe ( Gorzów Wielkopolski ). Here he developed a new form of economic advice based on the results of soil studies. He published a lot of the experiences he gained in his book “Practical fertilizer theory for agricultural operations”. In 1938 he took over the management of the agricultural investigation office and the research institute in Kassel-Harleshausen. In 1939 he qualified as a professor at Hohenheim with a study of climatic conditions for catch crops . The Second World War interrupted his scientific activity.

After 1945, Rheinwald worked together with Gerhardt Preuschen at the Max Planck Institute for Agricultural Work Science and Technology in Imbshausen near Northeim on the "economic framework", a planning process for determining appropriate organizational forms of agricultural businesses. In 1950 he was appointed director of the newly founded institute for agricultural advice at the Hohenheim Agricultural University. Here he worked from 1951 as a. Full Professor, since 1958 full professor. Based on his basic idea that the person seeking advice should be at the center of all counseling activities, he tried to make use of sociology, pedagogy and psychology for agricultural counseling in addition to economics. The institute he heads took on a leading position internationally in the field of agricultural advice. Noteworthy among his publications is the lecture he gave in Hohenheim in 1963, “Agriculture as a spiritual task”.
