Cheb Aziz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheb Aziz (stage name; Arabic الشاب عزيز, DMG Šāb ʿAzīz ), real name: Bechiri Boudjema (بوجمعة بشير) (* 1968 ; † September 20, 1996 ) was an Algerian Raï singer. He was one of the most popular Rai singers in North Africa.

The musician, who lives in exile in London , was kidnapped on September 18, 1996 when he made a short visit to his homeland for a wedding. His body was found two days later in Constantine . Rai music had been declared blasphemy (blasphemy) by Islamic fundamentalists and was banned in areas over which they dominated. In particular, it played a role in the fact that sex and alcohol were repeatedly a topic in the texts . Besides Cheb Aziz, other popular Rai singers such as Rachid Baba Ali Ahmed and Cheb Hasni were murdered by fundamentalists. He left a wife, also a singer, and two children.
