Cheb Hasni

Cheb Hasni (born January 1, 1968 in Oran , Algeria ; † September 29, 1994 ; actually: Hasni Chakroun ) was an Algerian singer and the most important representative of the "Raï sentimental", a particularly smooth and graceful variety of Raï , at its center love (also physical) is what earned him the mocking nickname " Julio Iglesias des Raï" in the West . In the civil war between the government and the Islamists at the beginning of the nineties, however, the social explosive power of the topic could hardly be overestimated, and its songs were on the index.

Hasni, who, unlike many other Raï artists, consistently refused to go into exile, was murdered on September 29, 1994 by a lone political perpetrator. He left a wife and a son. Whether the perpetrator had an Islamist or state terrorist background could never be clarified.

Hasni's murder changed the Raï, according to the Algerian writer Aziz Chouki "he changed the texts and transformed the Raï scene into a protest movement" . Hasni, who originally wanted to become a professional soccer player , made his breakthrough in the summer of 1987 with "Baraka", a duet with the legendary Chaba Zahouania . Despite the disabilities he faced, he remained one of the most popular and successful musicians in Algeria until his murder. Between 1989 and 1992 alone, he published 150 cassettes.
