Chaba Zahouania

Chaba Zahouania (real name Halima Mazzi ; * 1959 in Oran , Algeria ) is an Algerian singer. She is considered an important Raï interpreter.

Life

Chaba Zahouania is the daughter of a Moroccan and an Algerian. She began her singing career in a meddaha , an all- women group that performs at weddings, baptisms, and religious gatherings. In 1981 she signed her first record deal, and in 1986 she had her first Raï success with Khali Khali (my uncle, my uncle) in a duet with Cheb Hamid . After the murder of her friend Cheb Hasni in Oran on September 29, 1994, she left Algeria for some time and moved to France.

Zahouania is considered an icon of Algerian youth. Its reputation spread to France and North America. In 1999 she returned to Algeria and sang duets with Raï stars such as Cheb Abdou . In 2005 she was offered a stay in Mecca by the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika as part of his first pilgrimage, which she processed musically in 2006. Zahouania was a supporter of the Abdelaziz Bouteflika Committee in 2009.
