Alex Atala

Milad Alexandre Mack Atala (born December 9, 1968 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian chef .

biography

His first career began as a DJ in his hometown . With that he achieved a certain notoriety in Brazil. After graduating from school, he went to Europe in 1989 and worked for several years in Italy , France and Belgium . There he ran out of money and had to work as a painter and house painter. To get a residence permit, he attended the hotel management school in Namur .

When his son Pedro was born in 1994, he returned to São Paulo and soon made a name for himself in the industry. He received the Discovery of the Year award from the Brazilian restaurant association Abredi . 1999 Atala opened his own two restaurants: the Namesa , a kind of fast food and his restaurant D.OM . Atala combines European cooking techniques with ingredients from the Amazon and the rainforest, for example wild fruits, manjoc roots or forest ants that taste like lemongrass. The restaurant will soon be voted one of the best restaurants in the world and appreciated by top chefs like René Redzepi from Restaurant Noma .

In 2006 the DOM was voted one of the best 50 restaurants in the world in the ranking of “ The World's 50 Best Restaurants ” by “ Restaurant Magazine ”. From originally 50th place it climbed to 4th place in 2012, and in 2013 it was 6th on this list.

Not far from the DOM , Atala will also open the "Dalva e Dito" bistro in 2009.

In 2012 he founded his institute called ATÁ, with which local small businesses were promoted and u. a. document the food of the Amazon and preserve its culinary heritage. In April 2013, Alex Atala was included in Time magazine's "List of the 100 Most Influential People in the World" and can be found there in the Artists section alongside stars such as Steven Spielberg and Christina Aguilera .
