Heinrich Benckert

Heinrich Reinhold Hugo Max Benckert (born September 5, 1907 in Berlin , † May 13, 1968 in Rostock ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Heinrich Benckert was born on September 5, 1907 in Berlin as the son of the Reichsbank director Max Benckert (1876–1941) and his wife Elisabeth Koch (1877–1964). There he passed his Abitur in 1925 . For the next four years he studied theology at the universities of Tübingen , Erlangen , Greifswald and Berlin . He passed his first theological examination in 1930. In 1931 Benckert received his doctorate in philosophy and was vicar until 1932 . Then he took his second theological exam and was ordained . Pastor in Schönow since 1932 , he received his doctorate in theology in 1935 . In 1934 he also joined the Pastors' Emergency Association . As a result of the church struggle he was arrested in 1935 and was banned from staying in the province of Silesia in 1936 and 1937 . From 1935 to 1940 he worked as a pastor in St. Salvator in Breslau . Arrested again in 1937, however, he had to serve his prison sentence in Schneidemühl . Between 1940 and 1945, Benckert was in the Wehrmacht's telecommunications service as a sergeant, but was then briefly an American prisoner of war. For the next ten years, Benckert was pastor in Erfurt . He received a teaching position in Halle in 1949. In 1954 he was a lecturer at the University of Greifswald and from 1955 he worked as a professor for systematic theology in Rostock . Benckert was a member of the Ecumenical Study Committee . In 1961, seven years before his death, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the University of Göttingen . He also received the medal for fighters against fascism in 1965.
