Aleksandr Arbuzov ( Russian Александр Ерминингельдович Арбузов , scientific. Transliteration Aleksandr Erminingel'dovič Arbuzov , 31 August * . Jul / 12. September  1877 greg. In Arbuzov Baran ; † 22. January 1968 in Kazan ) was a Soviet and Russian chemist . He was a pioneer in organophosphate chemistry .

Life

1896-1900 studied Arbusow chemistry at the University of Kazan under Alexander Mikhailovich Saizew (1841-1910, discoverer of the Saytzeff rule ) and worked there until 1906 as an assistant for organic chemistry. In 1905 he obtained a master's degree in chemistry. At the Forest and Agricultural Institute in Novo-Alexandria he worked as a professor from 1906 to 1911. Then he returned to Kazan, where he received his doctorate in 1914. chem. received his doctorate. From 1911 to 1930 he was a professor of organic chemistry there, and from 1929 to 1949 he was director of the Butlerow Institute. Between 1930 and 1962 he was a professor with a chair for chemical technology in Kazan, from 1945 he was director of the Arbusow Institute. In 1962 Arbusow retired from Kazan University .

Scientific importance

Arbusow is known for the Arbuzov reaction named after him , also Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction, which he developed in 1906 and which plays an important role in organic chemistry . Arbuzov synthesized - partly with his son Boris Aleksandrovič - esters of phosphoric acid and thioesters of phosphorous, phosphonous and phosphinous acids. He also synthesized compounds that contain phosphorus-carbon bonds. These classes of compounds have found wide practical use as insecticides . The production of mesomeric-stabilized radicals of the triarylmethane type was also part of the research of Arbuzov's work.

In addition to his scientific work, Arbusow wrote A Brief Sketch of the Development of Organic Chemistry in Russian in 1948 .

Awards

Arbusow was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1943 and 1947 . He also carried the title Hero of Socialist Labor and received five orders of Lenin . Since 1947 he was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
