Phosphonic acid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phosphonic acid is the IUPAC name for the acid HP (OH) 2 , which is a tautomer of phosphinic acid [H 2 P (= O) (OH)]. Salts and esters of phosphonic acid are called phosphonites .

Only organic phosphonic acids are known, e.g. B. Phenylphosphonous acid.
Phosphonic acids should not be confused with phosphinous acid .

Manufacturing

Oxidation of primary phosphines to phosphonic acid

During the air oxidation of primary phosphines (R – PH 2 ), the corresponding organic phosphonous acid is formed via the intermediate stage of the primary phosphine oxides (e.g. with R = phenyl group ).

Synthesis of phenylphosphonous acid (R = phenyl)

Oxidation of secondary phosphines to phosphinous acid and phosphinic acid

The oxidation of secondary phosphines (R 2 PH), on the other hand, produces secondary phosphine oxides (R 2 HP = O), which tautomerize to phosphinous acid and can be further oxidized to phosphinic acids :
