Eckart Peterich

Eckart Peterich (born December 16, 1900 in Berlin-Grunewald , † April 13, 1968 in Florence ) was a German writer, journalist and translator.

family

His parents were the sculptor Paul Peterich (1864–1937) and the pianist Elsbeth Kühn (1876–1935). He had two younger brothers and two younger sisters:

  • Lukas Hermann (1902–1985), painter in Holland and Switzerland
  • Magnus (* 1915) bookseller
  • Gerda Peterich (1906–1974)
  • Anneliese (1904–1945), singer, Dresden.

Peterich was married to the Belgian artist Berthe (Bettina) Warnant.

Life

Around 1905 the Peterich family moved to Italy, in the Carrara area to Forte dei Marmi . As a young man Eckart met Peterich Theodor Däubler (1876–1934), whose father gave him "friendly help and collection" in Florence. After the First World War, he repeatedly toured Greece with Däubler .

In 1914 the family moved back to Hellerau near Dresden . Until 1933 Eckart Peterich was a journalist and travel reporter in Athens and Rome and also a correspondent for the League of Nations in Geneva . Then he began his activities as a freelance writer. He lived in Paris for a long time and did not return to Germany until 1946. After 1954 Peterich worked as a correspondent for various German newspapers in Paris and London.

Effect and awards

In 1964 Peterich received the Commander's Cross of the Republic of Italy . He was director of the German library in Milan (1959) and head of the German library in Rome (1960/61). In 1960 he received the Immermann Prize of the city of Düsseldorf. Eckart Peterich was program director of the Goethe-Institut for the maintenance of the German language abroad in Munich (1962). Since 1962 he was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt .
