Hans Pietsch (Go player)
Hans Reinhard Pietsch (born September 27, 1968 in Bremen , † January 16, 2003 in Amatitlán , Guatemala ) was the best contemporary German Go player .
After his community service, Hans Pietsch studied business sinology . He had been playing Go since he was 10. At a tournament he met the Japanese Go player Chizu Kobayashi , who had made it her business to make Go better known in the western part of the world. She invited him to come to Japan to study Go.
In 1988 Pietsch became the German Go Champion . Pietsch dropped out and went to Japan in 1990. He became the only German professional player in the Japanese professional association Nihon Ki-in . He achieved the 4th Dan title.
On January 16, 2003, Hans Pietsch was murdered in Guatemala in an armed robbery. He was on a promotional tour through Cuba, Guatemala and Mexico to make the game of go better known there.
The Nihon Ki-in awarded Hans Pietsch the 6th Dan title posthumously . Every year, Go 4 School organizes a “Hans Pietsch Memorial” championship, which is dedicated to the memory of Hans Pietsch.
