Dare (actually Sigi (Siegfried) von Koeding ; born September 15, 1968 in Basel , † March 6, 2010 ibid) was a Swiss graffiti-writing artist and curator .

Life

The son of the Swiss author Yvette Amann and the German Rolf Kurt von Koeding began spraying graffiti illegally in 1986. Under the pseudonym Dare , von Koeding, who was also a rock singer, turned his hobby into a profession in 1990 and started as a freelance artist. He sprayed graffiti not only on concrete, but later also on canvases and other objects that were subsequently exhibited in galleries, museums and at trade fairs.

After his first assignment in the Basel media company for the photographer Onorio Mansutti and a large wall design for the community of Münchenstein (1990), he did work such as a stage design for the Béjart Ballet in Lausanne (1992) or the painting of the theater tram on behalf of Migros Northwest Switzerland (1995) with first newspaper reports on a national level, accompanied by television appearances and reports on Swiss television. Increasingly, international projects were added, such as the design of facades, walls and shops in Los Angeles , New York City and Hamburg as well as life paintings with other graffiti artists in Paris , Barcelona , Zagreb and Næstved (Denmark). At the graffiti exhibition Concrete or Wallpapers 2001 in the Swiss Embassy in London , Dare met his English colleague Banksy , whom he invited to his first exhibition in Germany, the Urban Discipline 2002, in Hamburg, where both of them together with Os Gemeos , DAIM , Loomit , Alexone, H. Beikirch, ZEDZ and others exhibited.

In 2007, Dare and his friend Toast designed the 200 m² Sachs apartment in Velden Castle on Lake Wörthersee for the industrial heir and photographer Gunter Sachs . The project was documented photographically by Sachs for the magazine Architectural Digest .

At the Baselworld 2007 watch and jewelry fair , the Swiss watch brand Pierre DeRoche presented its watch collection, limited to eleven examples, with dials hand-painted by Dare with a “spray happening” in the presence of the artist. The Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig showed from March to June 2008 See images of Dare in the exhibition Art is female. In Kurt Aeschbacher's talk show on SRF1 on April 15, 2009, Sigi von Koeding explained his career from an illegal “smear” to a recognized artist under the motto “Grown-ups”.
