The Brasilea Foundation is an international exhibition center in Basel , Switzerland, with a focus on Brazilian artists and art that deals thematically with Brazil.

The exhibition house is located in Basel's Rheinhafen directly in the three-country corner , bordering France and Germany . The collection of the founder Walter Wüthrich has been accessible to the public since 2005.

history

Founder Walter Wüthrich set out from the Basel Rhine port, where the exhibition center is today, in 1939 with the aim of South America . His trip took him to Rio de Janeiro . At the beginning of the 1950s he met the Austrian-Brazilian painter Franz Josef Widmar in Rio. A lifelong friendship developed and Walter Wüthrich supported his friend as a patron and bought the painter's first paintings. In 1995, on his deathbed, he promised Widmar that he would do his best to exhibit his paintings in a permanent gallery and thus to honor his complete work.

At this point in time, Wüthrich had already acquired over 400 paintings by Widmar. After his death, he also bought the rest of the work and set about concretizing the “Brasilea Foundation” project, with which the idea of a cultural exchange between Switzerland and Brazil was linked from the beginning. In Basel he met the photographer Onorio Mansutti, who later became the first president of the Brasilea Foundation, and asked him to look around for suitable premises for the implementation of the foundation project. Walter Wüthrich died in Rio de Janeiro in 2002. He was privileged to know that his ideas would be implemented in a former ship engine workshop in Basel's Rheinhafen exactly where he had left for South America 63 years earlier.

The Brasilea Foundation was only officially established after Wüthrich's death on September 22, 2003. The building on Westquai 39 in the Rheinhafen was also only acquired after his death. Since moving into the house in May 2005, the Brasilea Foundation has made an important contribution to the promotion and mediation of Brazilian art and cultural projects in Switzerland, which is unique in this form in Europe. The initial financial difficulties could be avoided by the sale of works of art and the leasing of foundation premises for event purposes and thus the preservation of the Brasilea Foundation was secured.

Cooperations

In order to achieve the foundation's purpose of promoting cultural exchange between Switzerland and Brazil, the Brasilea Foundation cooperates with the numerous Brazilians living in Switzerland with a number of other institutions. The cooperation partners include the Goethe Institute and the Brazilian embassy in Switzerland.

Buildings / architecture

The four-storey workshop building for Rhine shipping was built in 1964 in the immediate vicinity of France and Germany in the triangle of three countries. It is positioned directly in the green strip of the berm slope parallel to the Rhine. The building was converted into the foundation's headquarters in 2004/2005, is container-shaped, green and opens exclusively to the water side thanks to its horizontal light strips. The external appearance is structured and determined by two materials: reinforced concrete in the area of the basement and translucent material made of green light corrugated sheets made of fiberglass on the floors above. Depending on the incidence of light and the location of the beholder, this facade cladding shimmers and glitters, reflecting different things from the surroundings. Untreated materials were consciously used in order to do justice to both the original use and the new use as an art and culture house. Simplicity and robustness are intended to express that architecture is to be understood as an everyday article. The aesthetic effect of the building in the harbor is deliberately staged; the former industrial elegance should be reflected and the changes in the port area symbolized at the same time. The cantilevered crane system is a significant contemporary witness and functions as a landmark of the building and the port.

The collection

The origin of the foundation is the permanent Walter Wüthrich collection with over 500 pictures by the artist Franz Josef Widmar and personal items, which are shown separately as the centerpiece on the 1st floor. The Walter Wüthrich Collection is owned by the “Children In Brazil.” Foundation

The collection now includes works by numerous other artists such as by José Bechara, Maureen Bisilliat, Marcelo Bratke, Luiz Dolino, Alex Flemming, Anja Ganster, Hilal Sami Hilal, Mariannita Luzzati, Oscar Muñoz, Mira Schendel , Manfredo de Souzanetto, Evandro Teixeira, Pierre Verger and Zezão.
