person

Jon Ryan Schaffer was born on March 15, 1968 in Franklin, Indiana. At the age of 14 he got his first guitar and started writing his first songs. At 16 he left home and moved to Tampa, Florida. There he formed his first band, Purgatory, in 1985. This band later changed its name and became Iced Earth (1988). Jon is the only remaining member of the original line-up. He had to undergo operations on his neck several times because he had previously fractured a neck vertebra during a stage performance that was too intense. This problem still accompanies him today, so that, for example, the Iced Earth Tour in 2004 had to be postponed. Jon's role models in metal are mainly bands such as KISS , Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Alice Cooper , Black Sabbath or AC / DC . His favorite album is Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast". Besides music, his great love is his Harley-Davidson and his interest in history, with a particular focus on the American Civil War. This also inspired him to write the 32-minute epic "Gettysburg (1863)" on the Iced Earth album The Glorious Burden , which is thematically a collection of songs about special historical events. Jon has had a daughter since 2005.

Projects

Iced Earth

Jon Schaffer is the founder of the band Iced Earth and meanwhile the only remaining founding member. The reason for the line-up change is often given that he is perceived as eccentric.

Schaffer takes on rhythm guitar and background vocals in the band and is largely solely responsible for the composition of the pieces. His driving and galloping guitar playing has become an essential feature of the band's sound, which clearly sets them apart from other power metal bands.

Demons & Wizards

He works with Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian under the name Demons & Wizards . The band is distinguished by their mixture of Kürsch's voice, which is typical for Blind Guardian, and Schaffer's galloping rhythm riffs, which are an important characteristic of Iced Earth . After their successful self-titled debut, the two musicians released their second work in 2005. It's called "Touched by the Crimson King". While on the debut it was still possible to clearly differentiate between Iced Earth and Blind Guardian, the new longplayer developed its own style. Jon Schaffer's driving guitar riffs still predominate, but the album seems more of a piece.

In an interview in 2018, Schaffer announced that he would like to concentrate on Demons & Wizard again with Hansi Kürsch.

Sons of Liberty

In December 2009 Jon Schaffer released his solo project "Sons of Liberty" with the album "Brush-fires of the Mind", which can be downloaded free of charge from the homepage. The work was created independently of Schaffer's work with Iced Earth , but a musical similarity cannot be denied. Unlike his other publications, this project has a strong system-critical aspect and denounces the political situation, mainly with reference to the USA.
