Arthur Baghdassarjan ( Armenian Արթուր Բաղդասարյան , in scientific transliteration Art'owr Bałdasaryan ; born November 8, 1968 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian politician and party leader of the Land of Law .

Life

Arthur Baghdassarjan graduated from Moscow State University in 1986 . Baghdassarian's political career began in 1995 as a member of the then ruling Armenian All-National Movement of President Levon Ter-Petrosian . He became known to the general public as the host of a television program that introduced the government's draft constitution (the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR , which declared itself independent from the USSR on September 21, 1991 , was only on May 20, 1991 - some runoff elections only on June 3rd - was elected in free elections, the first National Assembly was therefore not elected until 1995, with a new constitution being voted on at the same time).

In the elections on July 5, 1995, Baghdassarjan entered the Armenian National Assembly as a member of the Shengawit (a district of Yerevan) . Both the parliamentary elections and the referendum through which the draft constitution was adopted were accompanied by major irregularities. During the government crisis in February 1998, he was one of a group of MPs who left the Armenian All-National Movement faction, helping to cause the president to resign.

Baghdassarjan founded the Land of Justice party and has been its chairman ever since. In the following elections on May 30, 1999, he again entered the National Assembly, his party won a total of six out of 131 seats. In addition to massive election advertising on television, the charismatic appearance of Baghdassarjan, which many observers call populist , contributed to this success .

In the elections for the third National Assembly on May 25, 2003, the rule of law won 18 seats, making it the second largest parliamentary group to support the government after the Republican Party . Baghdasarianan was elected President of the National Assembly on June 12, 2003 as the parliamentary group leader. In Armenia, it is widely believed that the Republican Party only agreed to this under pressure from President Robert Kocharyan (non-party) and Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan (also non-party at the time), and that Sarkissyan was Baghdasarian's main supporter.

Despite his participation in the government, he openly criticized the government several times. In an interview in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on April 18, 2006, he stated that the future of Armenia lies in the EU and NATO, and that Russia must not block Armenia's path to Europe. This was the first time that Baghdasarianan distanced himself from the rest of the government in foreign policy matters and thus contributed to the breakup of the coalition - the other ruling parties (in addition to the Republican Party, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation ) and President Robert Kocharyan were no longer willing to accept Baghdasarian's public statements tolerate. On June 1, 2006 Tigran Torossjan was elected as the new President of Parliament. Baghdasarianan became one of the leaders of the opposition.
