Peter Kristian Ahola (born May 14, 1968 in Espoo ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and official as well as current scout , who in the course of his active career between and among others 129 games for the Los Angeles Kings , Pittsburgh Penguins , San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Further stations were Espoo Blues , HIFK Helsinki and TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga and Södertälje SK in the Swedish Elitserien . Since 2016 he has worked as a scout for the Vegas Golden Knights from the NHL.

Career

Ahola began his career in his hometown at Kiekko-Espoo , where he first went through the club's junior teams. In the 1987/88 season he was first used in the professional team, which at that time was third class and played in the II-divisioona . Likewise after the promotion to the I-divisioona , the second division, a year later. In the summer of 1989, the defender went to North America and began studying at Boston University , where he also played for the university team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

After two years there, the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League signed the undrafted free agent . In his first year, in the 1991/92 season , the Finn made 71 games in the NHL, but was also used in seven games in the lower class International Hockey League with the Phoenix Roadrunners . Nevertheless, the Kings gave him in November 1992 at the beginning of the 1992/93 game year to the Pittsburgh Penguins . After only about four months they sent him back to California, this time to the San Jose Sharks , where Ahola ended the season. In the summer, the Sharks transferred him for Dave Capuano to the Tampa Bay Lightning , which in turn gave him over to the Calgary Flames in October without he had even played a game for them. So the Finn accomplished the feat of being signed to five different NHL franchises in eleven months . In the 1993/94 season he came only to two missions with the Calgary Flames and was mainly used in their farm team in the American Hockey League , the Saint John Flames . Also due to the lockout postponement of the start of the season of the NHL game year 1994/95 in the NHL, Ahola returned to his Finnish homeland.

There he initially ran again for his home club Kiekko-Espoo, before moving to HIFK Helsinki for the 1995/96 season within the league . After two years there followed two seasons each with TPS Turku , with whom he became Finnish champions in spring 1999 , and his home club, which had been renamed Espoo Blues . For the 2001/02 season , the defender moved again abroad. At Södertälje SK from the Swedish Elitserien , he let his career end, which he ended after the 2002/03 season at the age of 35.

After his active career, Ahola initially worked from 2004 to 2006 as a scout for the European player market with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League. From 2012 to 2016, the Finn was again employed by the Espoo Blues and acted as the club's sports director in the 2015/16 season after previously working as assistant to the general manager . Since the summer of 2016, Ahola has been working again as a scout in the NHL, where he is responsible for the European scouting division of the Vegas Golden Knights .
