Life

Rasmus Lerdorf was born in Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland, to Danish parents. His father was an engineer and studied the ionosphere , while his mother was a teacher. At the age of three Rasmus moved with his family to Frederiksværk in Denmark , according to other sources to Frederikssund . When Rasmus Lerdorf was 13 years old, the family emigrated to Canada. There a friend of his father's showed him the Sinclair ZX81 and he began to develop an interest in computers.

A little later he received a Commodore 64 and started programming. At King City High School he designed and sold a mailbox system for a Unix computer. He was then allowed to train the teachers in computer science so that they could pass on the subject in class. He graduated from high school in 1988 and began studying software engineering at the University of Waterloo .

In 1993 he graduated with a bachelor's degree and moved to Brazil , where he worked for a software company. For this company he was stationed in Silicon Valley , where he was supposed to sell their products. Because Lerdorf considered the software products to be out of date, he gave up the job and moved to Toronto , where he worked on a predecessor system to PHP at the University of Toronto . He invented the computer language PHP / FI in 1994/95 . The first version of this programming language was a collection of C programs . The set originally named PHP / FI for “Personal Home Page / Forms Interpreter” was later renamed to PHP for “ P HP: H ypertext P reprocessor”.

He later worked for IBM and Linuxcare and then from 2002 to 2009 for Yahoo . He then worked at WePay and has been working for Etsy since 2012 .

Rasmus Lerdorf works as an open source activist.
