Michael James Romeo (* 6. March 1968 in New York , NY , USA ) is an American guitarist and founder of the progressive metal band Symphony X .

style

Romeo started playing guitar at the age of 14 and was influenced by many different guitarists as well as classical composers. The most important influence was Yngwie Malmsteen , whose “neo-classical” style can still be heard in Romeo's music today. Nevertheless, Romeo has developed his own style that distinguishes him from other musicians of this genre. What is very striking for Romeo is his relatively frequent use of so-called "tapped arpeggios" in addition to the "classic swept arpeggios". So he taps arpeggios not only in descending order, but also in ascending order, mostly with the simultaneous accompaniment of a keyboard. He is widely regarded as a guitar virtuoso, which earned him a status as musician's musician, especially among guitarists .

Typical scales that Romeo uses are the diminished scale, 1st form ( listening ? / I ), combined with the Phrygian dominant scale ( listening ? / I ) and the minor pentatonic ( listening ? / I ). In addition, there is the whole tone scale ( listening ? / I ) and connections between Aeolian and Locrian or E-Dorian with D # -Dorian as at the beginning of “Communion and the Oracle”. Solo career

In 1994 Romeo recorded a solo CD called "The Dark Chapter", through which a Japanese record label became aware of him. Then was asked if he had a band because that plays a style as on the solo album, leading to the creation of Symphony X led.

Michael Romeo is best known for his virtuoso playing, but is also talented in other ways. He produces all Symphony X albums himself and Romeo does the recordings in his home studio .

In a chat with the official Symphony X fan club on March 20, 2006, he announced that he would record another solo album. However, this will only happen after the completion of the new Symphony X album "Paradise Lost", which was released in June 2007.

In 2018 his solo album "War of the Worlds - Pt. 1" was released.

Participation in bands and projects

In addition to working with Symphony X, Romeo worked with a number of other bands, artists and projects in the metal field. In 2004 he recorded the solo album “Coldness” with the Stratovarius singer Timo Kotipelto . He can also be heard as a guest soloist on the albums "The Universal Migrator, Part II - Flight of the Migrator" and "01011001" by Ayreon and made a guest contribution to the album "Forward and Beyond" by the Ukrainian-American keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij .
