The diminished scale, or diminished scale, is the most common octatonic scale in music . It consists of eight tones, the distance between two tones is always alternating a whole tone and a semitone . Diminished scales are often used in jazz . They have a tritone content of 4 and a fifth width of 11.

Because of the evenly changing spacing of the individual scale tones, this type of scale is also called alternating eight-step . It has two manifestations: one that begins with a whole step (the whole step -semitone ladder ) and one that starts with a semitone step (the semitone-whole step ladder ). The designation diminished comes from the fact that the tone stock of the alternating eight-step scale consists of two diminished seventh chords that are offset from one another by one second : with the semitone-whole-tone scale by a small second, with the whole-tone-semitone scale by a major second . The alpha chord also consists of the tones of the diminished scale .

Limited transposition possibilities

For reasons of symmetry, there are only three different transposition options in equal tuning ; the alternating eight-level is therefore also the second of the Messiaen modes . Every four diminished keys use the same notes; they only start at different starting points within the scale (indicated in brackets).
