As Blattsteiger ( Phyllobates ; from ancient Greek φύλλον phýllon , German “Blatt, Laub” and βάτης bátēs , German “Sprinkler” ) is a genus of frogs from the family of poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae), which because of the use of their skin poisons by Indians be called. Five species of the genus Phyllobates are counted, which occur in the Central and South American rainforest between Nicaragua and Colombia .
From the relatively harmless alkaloids of mites, the animals synthesize the poison batrachotoxin , which is one of the strongest known poisons, and, depending on the species, other poisons. In captivity, the animals lose their toxicity because they lack the food supply necessary to synthesize the toxins. The amount of poison from Phyllobates terribilis is said to be enough to kill ten adult humans. The poisons are all alkaloids .
