Torbjörn Arvidsson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torbjörn Arvidsson (born May 6, 1968 ) is a former Swedish football player . With over 300 games for Halmstads BK in Allsvenskan , the defender is the record holder within the club. In the course of his active career he won both the Swedish championship title and the national cup twice.

Career

Arvidsson started his career at Kalmar FF . With the second division he moved into the final of the national cup in 1987, in which the team around Peter Nilsson , Billy Lansdowne and Jan Jansson met GAIS . With a 2-0 win against the Gothenburg club, he won the first title of his career. Nevertheless, the year ended unpleasant for the club, as with one point behind IFK Hässleholm and Karlskrona AIF together with Skövde AIK a relegation place was occupied and he was relegated to the third division. Arvidsson initially remained loyal to the club. In the third division season in 1988, his team delivered a duel with Lunds BK for direct resurgence, which was ultimately achieved with a two-point lead.

In the meantime, however, Arvidsson had drawn attention to himself in a higher class. In early 1989 he joined the first division promoted Halmstads BK , who was supervised by the Scots Stuart Baxter . At the side of Jan Jönsson , Jonas Dahlgren and Stefan Lindqvist , he narrowly missed the championship finals with the team as fifth. Slipped into the relegation battle in the following year, he rose with the club in the autumn round of the 1991 season from the second division, but managed there the following spring under coach Mats Jingblad the relay win and in the subsequent autumn round the direct promotion.

With the promoted team, Arvidsson once again established himself in the top half of the table, in particular Henrik Bertilsson's goals - together with Mats Lilienberg from Trelleborgs FF, he crowned himself the Allsvenskan top scorer with 18 goals this season - helped the team to fifth place in the table in the 1993 season . In the summer of 1995 he moved into the second cup final of his career with the team and with a 3-1 win over AIK he won this too. Thus qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup, he was part of the team alongside Niklas Gudmundsson , Freddie Ljungberg and Niclas Alexandersson , which attracted international attention when they defeated AC Parma with a 3-0 victory in the first leg of the last 16 . Against the Italian club, however, the second leg was lost with a 4-0 defeat.

After Jingblad left the club in late 1995 for IFK Göteborg , Tom Prahl took over as coach. Under him, a regular player on the club's defense, he won the team's third championship title in the club's history in the 1997 season . At the side of Mats Lilienberg, Håkan Svensson and Jesper Mattsson , he played all 26 games over the course of the season and contributed to the title win with three goals. In the qualifying round for the 1998/99 Champions League round , however, he failed with the team in the first round at the Bulgarian champions Litex Lovech . In the following two years, the defensive player , who had meanwhile been promoted to team captain , led the club to the top of the table before another championship triumph was due in the 2000 season .

After a short period in the middle of the table under Jonas Thern , his assistant Janne Andersson took over the coaching work and led the club back into the top group. Arvidsson hardly had any part in that. After a herniated disc in preparation for the 2004 season under the resulting surgery, he fell out on a long-term basis and came to two league appearances when he reached second place in the table behind Malmö FF . After trying unsuccessfully for a comeback until the following year, he finally ended his career in autumn 2005 after playing 306 first division games. He then moved to the club's coaching staff.
