Stefan Lindqvist (born March 18, 1967 - March 1, 2020 ) was a Swedish football player . The midfielder , who played five games for the Swedish national team between 1989 and 1990 , played in Sweden, Switzerland, China, Scotland and Norway.

Career

Lindqvist made his debut in the 1986 season at the side of Jon Jönsson , Mats Jingblad and Per Olsson for Halmstads BK in the Allsvenskan . Already in the following season he had established himself in the squad of the competition team and was on the field in all 22 games of the season, but the club rose as penultimate in the table together with IF Elfsborg in the second division. Under the newly signed coach Stuart Baxter , he was one of the regulars who forced the direct return to the first division. In the 1989 season he scored eight goals this season, leading the club's internal goalscorer list, tied with Tommy Frejdh . While the club just barely missed the championship finals as fifth in the table, he had played his way into the notepad of national coach Olle Nordin during the season. In the 2: 4 defeat against France in August 1989 he made his debut as a substitute for Mats Magnusson in the national team, his debut he crowned with the goal to 2-2 intermediate result. In the following games as part of the qualification for the 1990 World Cup , he was part of the squad, in the successes over Albania and Poland he worked as a substitute when reaching the finals as a qualifying group winner before England . In April of the following year, Lindqvist injured himself before the World Cup preparation games against Wales and Finland , the later nominated Tomas Brolin took his chance and pushed him out of the World Cup squad.

In the summer of 1990 Lindqvist left Sweden for the first time and moved to the Swiss club Neuchâtel Xamax . His stay in the National League A was short-lived, however, and in early 1991 he moved back to the reigning Swedish champions IFK Göteborg in his home country. With the team supervised by Roger Gustafsson , he finished first in the table at the end of the regular season of the 1991 season . In the championship finals, he was one of the four players who were successful scorers alongside Johnny Ekström , Ola Svensson and Peter Eriksson . With five goals he led the club to defend its title. The following years were also successful. Although the club missed defending their title in the championship as sixth in the table, in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League , after successes over Beşiktaş Istanbul and Lech Posen, they reached the eight-team group stage at the time. Behind AC Milan , who dominated group runner-up with six wins , he missed the final with six plus points, but had earned recognition.

In the 1993 season , Lindqvist's team fought against IFK Norrköping for the championship title, ultimately prevailing with five points ahead of the runner-up. The club was thus qualified again for the European premier class on its 90th birthday in 1994 and caused a surprise there. In the group stage of the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League , the team faced FC Barcelona , Manchester United and Galatasaray Istanbul , after four wins and one draw they qualified as group winners for the quarter-finals. There, due to the away goals rule, the German representative FC Bayern Munich failed . In November 1994 the club had already defended the championship title again, until 1996 the title hat trick succeeded in Sweden. Lindqvist was always a regular and was accordingly one of the 14 excellent master players. The success also had an impact on the team composition, with a number of players following offers from European professional leagues.

Lindqvist also moved abroad again in early 1997 when he accepted an offer from the Chinese club Dalian Wanda . After a short time, however, he returned to Europe, the 1997 season he played again for IFK Göteborg and was runner-up. In March 1998 the Finnish coach Harri Kampman brought him to FC Motherwell . Although he achieved relegation with the team, at the end of the season the club gave him clearance. He then moved to Strømsgodset IF in Norway . In 1999 he returned to IFK Göteborg, but ended his active career there in the same year.

Life

Lindqvist suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and died of it at the age of 52.
