Life

Hossein Behzad was born in Tehran in 1894 as the son of Mīrzā Fażl-Allāh Eṣfahānī . He has been interested in painting since early childhood. Hossein began to paint his first pictures at the age of eight. He trained as a miniaturist with Āqā Mollā ʿAlī Qalamdānsāz and later with Ḥasan Āqā Peykarnegār and opened his own artist workshop in the bazaar of Tehran when he was twenty .

In Europe, Hossein Behzad became known through his 1915 commissioned illustrations for Nezāmis Ḵamsa. In 1918 Hossein Behzad made his first trip to Europe. In 1935, Hossein Behzad traveled to Paris for thirteen months to study the miniatures in the collections of Persian manuscripts. After his return in 1936 he began to illustrate Omar Chajjam's Rubāʿīyāt in a style he developed. The illustrations, which were previously only shown at exhibitions, were first published in 1949 by Brigadier General Hossein-Ali Nouri Esfandiary in a book with 50 quatrains (Rubāʿīyāt) by Omar Chajjam that he edited. Esfandiary calls Behzad's miniatures “poems in pictures”. In 1946 he entered the service of the Bastan Museum ( Edāra-ye Bāstān-šenāsī ) and taught at the Art School ( Honarestān-e Honarhā-ye Zībā-ye Pesarān o Doḵtarān ) in Tehran. Many miniatures were created during this time, including as illustrations for the works of Firdausi and Hafis .

In the 1950s, Hossein Behzad achieved worldwide fame through exhibitions in London, Boston, Paris, Prague, Washington, New York and Brussels. Further exhibitions took place in India and Japan.

At the age of 65, he was awarded an honorary pension by the Iranian parliament.

In addition to an award for outstanding artistic achievements from the Tehran Ministry of Culture in 1949, Hossein Behzad received numerous national and international awards. Shortly before his death, Hossein Behzad was awarded the Art School Medal of Honor and the title Ostād (Master) for his life's work . He is considered to be one of the few masters of Persian miniature painting who, in addition to the traditional painting style, developed his own style into which he also integrated Western painting techniques. In 1994, the Behzad Museum (muze-ye Ostad Behzad) opened in Saadabad Park in Tehran, showing works by Behzad that his son gave to the Heritage Organization on the occasion of his centenary.
