The olive-gray mosquito-eater ( Conopophaga ardesiaca ), sometimes also called gray-breasted mosquito-eater , is a species of bird in the family of mosquito-eaters (Conopophagidae). The species has a large range that includes the South American countries Peru and Bolivia . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .

features

The olive-gray mosquito-eater reaches a body length of about 13 to 13.5 centimeters. The lower bill is lighter than the upper bill. The top of the male is olive brown. The back feathers have irregular black borders. Behind the eye it has a silver-white tufted stripe. The color of the underside is a lead-colored gray, which becomes whitish on the belly. The female is very similar to the male, but has an orange crown. It has practically no postocular stripe. The flanks are adorned with a clear brown tint.

distribution and habitat

The bird occurs occasionally in the undergrowth of mountain forests and their forest edges. It moves at altitudes between 800 and 2075 meters, but mostly between 1000 and 1700 meters.

behavior

Usually the bird travels singly or in pairs. Usually it sits in the branches of the deeper stratification layers . Still, you rarely see him on the ground. He jumps from branch to branch, always on the hunt for prey. It is rarely seen with other bird species. Even if you can only observe it irregularly, the bird does not seem particularly shy.

Subspecies

Two subspecies have been described, which differ mainly in their coloring:

  • Conopophaga ardesiaca ardesiaca d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye , 1837 Nominatform is present in the La Paz department in Bolivia
  • Conopophaga ardesiaca saturata Berlepsch & Stolzmann , 1906 differs from the nominate form in that it is somewhat darker with a pronounced olive tint. The underside including the gray on the side of the head also looks a bit darker. The side and the rump are much more brown. Occurs on the eastern slopes in southern Peru south of the La Oroya district . Is relatively common in the Cusco region , where its habitat overlaps with that of the rust-browed mosquito-eater ( Conopophaga castaneiceps ).
