Theodor Bogler

Theodor Bogler OSB (born April 10, 1897 in Hofgeismar , † June 13, 1968 in Andernach ) was a German ceramist and Benedictine monk .

Bogler was a grandson of the Wiesbaden architect Wilhelm Bogler and brother of the painter Friedrich Wilhelm Bogler . After serving as an officer in World War I , he studied at the State Bauhaus in Weimar from 1919 to 1920 , completed the preliminary course with Johannes Itten and attended classes with Lyonel Feininger . The summer semester of 1920 took him to Munich, where he studied architecture and art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University and at the Technical University . He then attended the ceramic workshop at the Bauhaus in Dornburg near Weimar until 1924 . There Bogler learned the pottery trade , in 1922 he passed the journeyman's examination. 1923 designed Bogler for the kitchen of the model house Am Horn in Weimar the Bogler-storage containers , which a classic of modernism apply. In 1924 he took over the commercial management there, his brother-in-law Otto Lindig was the technical manager. From 1925 to 1926, Bogler headed the model and mold workshop at the Velten plant of the Velten-Vordamm stoneware factory . Between 1934 and 1938 he worked with the HB workshops for ceramics in Marwitz.

In 1922 he married the widow of a captain who brought two children into the marriage. After the death of his wife in 1925, Bogler became a Catholic . In 1927 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach and studied philosophy and theology ; he was ordained priest on September 11, 1932. From 1938 to 1948 Bogler was prior of the abbey. In the period from 1934 to 1939 and a second time from 1947 to 1956, he directed the restoration work on the basilica of Maria Laach. From 1948 until his death he was director of the art publisher Ars liturgica and thus monastic director of the abbey's art workshops, which included, among other things, the sculpture department headed by Alphons Biermann as artistic director.
