history
Following a tip from her friend Nora Herz, Hedwig Bollhagen was able to resume production of the disused Haël workshops for artistic ceramics founded by Margarete Heymann and Gustav Loebenstein in 1934 through the new HB workshops . The new GmbH enabled the gradual reinstatement of previous company employees as well as a new product line - HB ceramics - by taking over employees from the Velten-Vordamm stoneware factory, which was closed in 1931 (including Theodor Bogler , Werner Burri ).
Like Margarete Heymann and the two employees mentioned, the ceramic master Thoma Gräfin Grote , developer and commercial assistant of the company since 1934/1935, was trained by Gerhard Marcks in the ceramics workshop of the State Bauhaus on the Dornburg . The painter Charles Crodel (1894–1973), who was friends with Gerhard Marcks, promoted the company since 1935 . He opened up the field of building ceramics and at the same time brought in the industrial experience he gained in the United Lusatian Glass Works in decor development ( Wilhelm Wagenfeld ). After the war, Heinrich Schild, who was a member of the NSDAP , fled to the West. Hedwig Bollhagen took over the business alone.
In 1972 the workshops were nationalized , but Hedwig Bollhagen remained the artistic director. In 1992 the company was finally re- privatized . After Bollhagen's death, the artist Heidi Manthey took on the role of artistic director.

History discussion
In connection with the gradual revitalization of production and the reinstatement of the employees of the two closed art ceramic factories Steingutfabriken Velten-Vordamm GmbH (1931) and Haël workshops for artistic ceramics (1933) through the mediation of the Cologne ceramist Nora Herz through the then 26-year-old Hedwig Bollhagen In 1934, following the exhibition on the founder's 100th birthday , there was talk of expropriation and Aryanization in the sense of the ordinance on the elimination of Jews from German economic life of November 12, 1938. At least two Jewish ceramists, Margarete Heymann and Nora Herz from Cologne, were involved in the establishment and profit of the HB workshops until at least the end of 1936 .
