Werner Burri (born October 18, 1898 in Thunstetten ; † May 13, 1972 in Bern ) was a Swiss ceramist who, as head of the model and mold workshop of the Velten-Vordamm stoneware factory in Velten, designed ceramic series molds and created individual pieces.

Life

Born in 1898 Burri broke quickly a degree in engineering at the Polytechnic in Zurich off to devote himself to painting. From 1921 he was registered as a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar and completed the preliminary course with Johannes Itten . Then he switched to the ceramics workshop at the Bauhaus , which was the only one of the Bauhaus workshops that was not set up in Weimar but in Dornburg an der Saale and was under the direction of Gerhard Marcks . Here, at the end of 1924, Burri passed the journeyman's examination as a potter. From 1925, after the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925 , where no more ceramics workshop was set up, Burri initially worked in the Dornburg workshop continued by Otto Lindig . In January 1928, taking over from Theodor Bogler , he went to the stoneware factory Velten-Vordamm in Velten as head of the model and mold workshop , where he was responsible for many of the series molds and individual pieces known to the company. In 1928 he met the ceramicist Hedwig Bollhagen in Velten . After the factory went bankrupt in 1931, he returned to Switzerland and worked in Marcel Noverraz's workshop in Carouge . From 1934 he worked again in Germany as a freelance artistic employee of the HB workshops for ceramics with Hedwig Bollhagen in Marwitz . Here he designed his own collection, the shapes of which are still preserved today. When the Second World War broke out , he had to leave Nazi Germany as a neutral confederate and returned to Switzerland for good in 1939. Here he worked as a freelance ceramist and had a teaching position at the Bern Ceramic College. In 1959 he was a founding member of the Association of Swiss Ceramists . Werner Burri died on May 13, 1972 in Bern.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Bauhaus, an exhibition with designs by Walter Burri will be shown in the Hetjens Museum in Düsseldorf in 2019 .
