Wilhelm Christian Bogler (born May 11, 1825 in Wiesbaden ; † April 24, 1906 there ) was a German architect of historicism .

Life

Wilhelm Bogler was born into the family of the Wiesbaden vice-principal Valentin Bogler (1794–1874) and his wife Katharina Zeitinger in Wiesbaden. The Bogler family came from Oestrich-Winkel, where they owned an estate. Katharina Zeitinger came from a family of teachers.

Little is known about Bogler's training as an architect. He probably did an apprenticeship with another architect before opening an office in Wiesbaden himself.

Bogler settled in Wiesbaden in 1851 at the latest. That year he was entered on the citizens' list. He lived and worked on Moritzstrasse, Adolfsallee and Rheinstrasse. In 1877 he moved into a house he presumably had built himself in Adelheidstrasse, where his brother-in-law, the painter Kaspar Kögler , also moved. He set up his office at the Schützenhof, in the old post office building. Kögler also had his painting school there.

Bogler was particularly involved in large-scale buildings in Wiesbaden, and he also built numerous villas in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area. He was responsible for the northern development of Adelheidstrasse (from 1862) and the Schützenhof grounds (from 1864–1877) with the Grand Hotel (1867) and post office (1869). From 1890 to 1892 he built the Josefskrankenhaus on Langenbeckplatz. His better-known projects include Villa Beck (1869–1872), Villa Böcking, Villa Knoop, the Wiesbaden Casino Society building (1872) and the Kochbrunnen (1887) including the Kochbrunnen Colonnade (1887/1888).

Bogler was a founding member of the Nassau Art Association in 1847 and also emerged as a draftsman himself. He also founded the Middle Rhine Architects and Engineers Association in 1874 .

Bogler was married a total of three times. The marriage with Ida Marianne Philipina Held (1829–1863) had two sons, Carolus Bernhardus Philippus Wilhelmus Bogler (garden designer) and Karl Ferdinand Moriz Peter Bogler. With Adolphine Elisabeth Pfaltz (1848- before 1876) Bogler had a daughter, Adolfine Bogler. In his third marriage he was married to a sister of the painter Kaspar Kögler , with whom he worked for many years in Wiesbaden. His grandchildren were Friedrich Wilhelm Bogler and Theodor Bogler . His brother, the vice rector and organist Carl Bogler, founded the Wiesbaden Cäcilienverein .

A memorial plaque for Bogler hangs on the Wiesbaden casino building, Friedrichstrasse 22.
