Alexander Vladimirovich Konovalov ( Russian Александр Владимирович Коновалов * 9. June 1968 in Leningrad ) is a Russian politician and was from May 12 2008 to January 21, 2020 Minister of Justice in the government of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (until 2012) and Dmitry Medvedev ( 2012-2020).

biography

Konovalov was born as the son of a Soviet naval member in what was then Leningrad (since 1991 again in Saint Petersburg). After his military service in the Soviet Army from 1986 to 1988, he studied law at Leningrad University . He graduated in 1992 and has since worked in the Petersburg Public Prosecutor's Office. While working for the prosecutor, Konovalov completed a distance learning course in Orthodox theology . In 1998 he was promoted to Chief Prosecutor of the Moscow District of Saint Petersburg, and in 2001 to the first Deputy Prosecutor of the City of Saint Petersburg. At the same time he was also a lecturer in civil law and Roman law at the Petersburg University.

In February 2005 Konovalov was appointed public prosecutor of the Russian republic of Bashkiria by then Minister of Justice Vladimir Ustinov . He held this office until November of the same year. On November 14, Konovalov was then appointed President Plenipotentiary (so-called Polpred ) in the Volga Federal District in place of his predecessor in this office, the former Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko .

After the official assumption of office of the former President Putin as head of government in May 2008 Konovalov was promoted to the new Minister of Justice by decree of the new President Dmitry Medvedev . In this office Konovalov replaced Vladimir Ustinov.

Alexander Konovalov is married and has two daughters and one son. Konovalov belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church .
