Bronstein's Children is a German feature film by the Polish director Jerzy Kawalerowicz . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jurek Becker , who also worked on the screenplay for the film.
action
The film is set in 1973. The Bronstein family is a Jewish German family living in East Berlin . Hans, the 18-year-old son of the Bronstein family, drives with his girlfriend Martha to his parents' summer house. In it he discovers a prisoner, a man in chains. While Father Bronstein and his friends were prisoners of the Nazis in a concentration camp , he was employed there as a Kapo . Hans starts an argument with his father. He believes that his father vigilante exercises and heard the prisoner before an ordinary court. However, the different life experiences of father and son do not allow for a match. Two worlds separate the two. Hans seeks the support of his older sister Elle. But she is traumatized by her war experiences, lives in a psychiatric hospital and is unable to make her own decisions. The father presses a confession out of the prisoner. He is of the opinion that the prisoner can now be sentenced in good conscience to a death that corresponds to the suffering of his victims in the concentration camp. Hans decides to free the prisoner.
Reviews
“All too delicately staged parable of guilt, atonement and forgiveness, which also mixes generational conflicts. As a result, the film gives away a lot of a possible startling effect and only captivates in parts because of the good cast ensemble. "
“Above all, the portrayal of Armin Mueller-Stahl, who gives Arno Bronstein a powerful and fragile shape at the same time, remains in the memory. A book worth reading, a film well worth seeing, which had little chance of finding an audience due to the miserable distribution work. "
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
