Jerzy Wójcik (born September 12, 1930 in Nowy Sącz ; † April 3, 2019 in Warsaw ) was a Polish cameraman , director and screenwriter .

Life

Born to Andrzej Wójcik, major in the 1st Podhalan Rifle Regiment . In the first days of World War II he was evacuated to Lviv with his mother and brother Marian , and later returned to Nowy Sącz. After the war the Wőjcik family moved to Boguszów ( Eng . Gottesberg) in the Sudetes .

Jerzy Wójcik completed his camera training at the Łódź Film School . He completed his studies in 1955 and became a member of the "Kadr" working group , but did not receive his diploma until 1964. In 1956 he worked as the second cameraman behind Jerzy Lipman on Andrzej Wajda's The Canal . He made his debut as head cameraman in 1958 with Andrzej Munks Eroica . He remained active as a cameraman until 1987. In addition to his work as a cameraman, he wrote scripts and created theater productions for Polish television from 1976 to 1985. From 1968 to 1970 he also worked as a cameraman in Yugoslavia.

He was a professor of cinematography. First he trained cameramen in 1981/82 at the Silesian University in Katowice and from 1984 at the Łódź Film School.

In 2006 his book Labirynt Światła (Labyrinth of Light) was published with thoughts on his professional activity. In 2017 his Sztuka filmowa (Film Art), a collection of his lectures at Warsaw University from 2000 to 2003, was released.

On March 9, 2009 he was awarded the Polish Film Prize for Lifetime Achievement by the Polish Film Academy . Jerzy Wójcik received the Officer's Cross in 1998 and the Commander's Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order in 2005. Posthumously on April 11, 2019, he received the Commander's Cross with the star of the Polonia Restituta Order. Jerzy Wójcik was the husband of the actress and director Magda Teresa Wójcik (1934–2011) and is the father of the physicist, set designer and computer graphic artist Tomasz Wójcik (* 1963). He spent the last years of his life in his villa in the Warsaw suburb of Podkowa Leśna and was buried in the local cemetery.
