outbreaks
Its volcanic eruption of 1902 was the second strongest eruption in the last century ( volcanic explosion index VEI: 6) and devastated large parts of the southwest of Guatemala.
The volcano's first historically recorded eruption lasted 19 days and peaked on October 25, 1902. In 1902 this was the third major volcanic eruption after the Soufrière on St. Vincent on May 7th and the Montagne Pelée on Martinique on May 8th.
From 1903 to 1913, the volcano was active in the crater that formed in the 1902 eruption.
Santiaguito
Since 1922 a lava dome called Santiaguito ( Spanish for little Santiago ) has been growing continuously . Santiaguito has been active since its inception. In 1929 the lava dome of the Santiaguito partially collapsed in an eruption. A pyroclastic flow occurred, killing an estimated 2,500 residents of the volcano.
A strong eruption occurred in April 2010. Since then, small explosions with periodic lava effusions, pyroclastic flows and lahars have taken place almost continuously .
