action

Melody Gerard is a capable and ambitious businesswoman on the team at the “Save Now” supermarket chain. She is about to be promoted, but should still help the 1,000. Prepare your company's megastore. This is supposed to open in her hometown, a sleepy little town at the end of the world. Shortly before Thanksgiving , she takes the chance to visit her family, who run a small café in the town. However, she does not want to stay there for too long because the jet set vacation with her friends is coming up.

At the city assembly, however, there is unexpected resistance. In particular, her childhood friend Carter stands out. Melody has the mayor on her side, but she gets involved in a conversation with Carter. In the meantime, he has bought and renovated their common house from the past and would like to convert it into a guesthouse. However, the pension is exactly where the shopping center is to be built. He also confesses to Melody that he has something left for her. Melody is not deterred, however. As she is about to leave, she slips on a step and hits her head.

Melody wakes up in a parallel world. She is married to Carter and the owner of her parents' cafe, which she converted into an organic cafe that only uses local products. It is about to open a second branch. But the supermarket chain is also threatening its location here. So Melody is now fighting on the other side and with her inside knowledge of the company she actually succeeds in pushing the giant back. Just as she succeeded, however, she slipped again on the stairs and woke up in the real world.

No longer so convinced of her employer, she is now doing everything possible to prevent the construction of the supermarket. She finds an old photo of Mark Twain in the foreground of the pension. This means that the pension is a national monument and may not be changed. At the last minute she succeeds in convincing a judge to sign an injunction . In this way she can prevent the first groundbreaking ceremony, which the company's CEO traveled to attend. The latter cancels the construction of the supermarket without further ado and is very interested in the café's organic concept.

reception

The dream of happiness uses two well-known motifs: the fight against a large capitalist corporation and a kind of parallel world in the style of Isn't life beautiful? (1945) and Family Man (2000). On the British film site The Moviescene , the film is therefore described as "nothing special", although it knows how to entertain with the interplay of the two main actors Jennie Garth and Cameron Mathison .

The German cinema magazine Cinema comes to the following conclusion: "TV blonde Garth is doing her best, the simple-minded script with the common US 'home at the stove' ideology unfortunately often gets in her way."
