action

The aging widow May Markham lives alone in a multi-story apartment building in New York City, where she occasionally receives mail from a friendly resident. At first the old lady does not attach any importance to the mix-ups. That changes when the said neighbor, the corrupt undercover cop Denny, is found dead one day. The police are quick to assume a suicide, although May has legitimate doubts. Her suspicion builds when Denny's mysterious love affair, Monica, contacts her, pretending to be involved in a police investigation. The young woman plays a double game and tells May about Denny's alleged involvement in crooked businesses, which are presented to the viewer in the form of flashbacks.

In reality, Monica is an undercover agent who is supposed to subvert the local drug scene, which she succeeds. Over the years she sneaks the trust of drug lord Gale Carmody and becomes his lover. At the same time, she becomes increasingly entangled in the drug swamp and herself becomes dependent. In a downward spiral, she shoots an innocent drug courier - albeit made docile with heroin. Unfortunately, this action is recorded on a mobile dictation device, which you have lost. From then on, Monica is feverishly looking for the incriminating material that she initially suspects Denny is. But when she clears it out of the way, she turns to May, hoping to find the evidence here.

At the end of the film, Monica, who has meanwhile been exposed as a police spy, succeeds in securing the evidence in May's possession. Yet her story comes to a tragic end. Harassed by gang members who are hostile to her, she chooses suicide as a serious drug addict.

criticism

"Overconstructed and unnecessarily convoluted thriller, which at least offers the two leading actresses the opportunity to shine."
