Vox Lux is an American drama directed by Brady Corbet . The film had its world premiere on September 4, 2018 as part of the Venice Film Festival , where it is competing for the Golden Lion .

The film is about the rise of singer Celeste to superstar after surviving a rampage during her school days . She then composes a song in which she processes the impressions of the tragedy and quickly becomes an icon. After her breakthrough, she became increasingly addicted to alcohol and drug use. She is planning a comeback, but its success is threatened by an attack in Croatia , possibly triggered by Celeste's music.
The plot of the film is divided into several acts and covers a total of 18 years, from 1999 to 2017, of Celeste's life. During this time she witnessed decisive events of the 21st century, such as the attacks of September 11, 2001 .

The director was Brady Corbet , who also wrote the script. Vox Lux is his second feature film, having made his directorial debut with The Childhood of a Leader in 2015.
Scott Walker composed the film music with Sia , the latter contributing songs specially written for the film's soundtrack.
Natalie Portman took on the lead role of Celeste and replaced Rooney Mara , who left the project in early 2018. Jude Law plays the manager of Celeste, Willem Dafoe lends his voice to the narrator.
Filming began on February 1, 2018 in New York City .
The film had its world premiere on September 4, 2018 at the Venice Film Festival , where it was shown in the main competition and was nominated for the Golden Lion . Furthermore Vox Lux on September 7, 2018 the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival listed.

Reviews
After the world premiere in Venice, the first reviews were very positive. The acting performance of Natalie Portman was particularly praised, which was described by Guy Lodge of Variety as captivating and by Michael Nordine (IndieWire) as powerful and haunting, whose presence one cannot avoid, even if one looks at one or the other Times would wish. Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as a melodramatic, high-grade spectacle, which at the same time stimulates thought.
Matthias Greuling of the Wiener Zeitung titled Vox Lux as a masterpiece about the fear. The film illustrates the permanent hysteria with which we as a society have surrounded ourselves since the Columbine rampage or the attacks of September 11, 2001 , masterfully and is the most relevant film of the Venice Film Festival, as it is most about the current living situation and sensitivities our company statement.
On Rotten Tomatoes , the film was able to convince 61% of all critics so far, based on 228 opinions.
