action

Contemporary London : The small traveling theater of Dr. Parnassus is past its prime. For a long time people have not been interested in his arts and ignore the attempts of young Anton to keep spectators at the theater car. The theater offers a special feature: a mirror that depicts the ideal fantasy world of the respective person when walking through. When a group of drunkards coming from a pub sees the traveling stage, one of the men is interested in the fairy, wants to grope her and has an argument with her. She escapes through the mirror and he follows her there, into his fantasy world. Since he will not return, his friends call the police, who examine the mirror but cannot find anything unusual. The troops then move on without penalty. What nobody but the theater people know: the world behind the mirror always gives those who step inside the choice between their own greatest vice and the alternative of renouncing vice. Those who renounce vice of their own accord will be saved and return to reality - here Dr. Parnassus won. Those who accept vice die and fall to the devil. He appears in the form of the black-clad, smoking Mr. Nick also at Dr. Parnassus to remind him of a pact long ago. Parnassus entered into a bet with the devil hundreds of years ago , which he won, and received immortality in return. When he fell in love with a woman at an old age, he made a new pact with the devil: he got his youth back and was able to win over the woman. For this Parnassus had to promise Mr. Nick the child of this love as soon as it was 16 years old. Parnassus agreed and is now desperate because his only daughter Valentina will be 16 in three days. He drowns his grief in alcohol, but has not yet told his daughter about her fate.

While driving over a bridge, Anton, who is secretly in love with Valentina, and the short helper Percy notice a man hanged on the bridge. They untie him - obviously a half-swallowed flute saved him from strangulation . He has lost his memory and is spontaneously taken into her heart by Valentina. She dreams of a down-to-earth life with her husband and child and hopes that this man, whom she initially calls George, is the key to it. Parnassus suspects that he is a henchman of Mr. Nick, who rejects any connection with the man who is actually called Tony. However, Mr. Nick offers Parnassus another bet to save Valentina: If you can win five souls by your 16th birthday, you should own Valentina.

Together with Tony, the theater people begin to modernize their program. Since Tony's charming manner is particularly attractive to women, they quickly get money and four woman souls, who stay on the right path in his first metamorphosis and come back to the present, among other things through Tony's leadership. Shortly before the saving fifth soul, a group of Russians appears at the theater car and follows Tony, who escapes through the mirror and transforms for the second time. Anton also followed Tony through the mirror, but can't prevent the Russians from catching up with Tony. Shortly before they can hang it up for the second time, a house appears in the fantasy landscape with a Russian mom, to which the four Russians go, like children. It turns out that the woman was nothing more than a machine controlled by Mr. Nick. Both sides now have four souls - Anton has also learned that the Russians have persecuted Tony because he owed them. Tony was the head of a well-known charity which, among other things, had set up a foundation for poor children with the money from the "Russian Mafia". This, however, had money laundered through the foundation . Anton realizes that Tony only acted out the memory loss for them in order to be able to immerse themselves in the theater troupe. Valentina now learns to her horror from her father that she is part of a big bet and Anton is frustrated because Valentina feels more for Tony than for him. When Anton learns from the newspaper that Tony is actually wanted as a criminal, there is a solid argument with Tony, as a result of which Valentina is pushed in the mirror. Tony follows her and they spend a romantic day together in the fantasy world of Valentina. She changes to the fantasy world of Tony, who appears with Valentina at a gala of his children's foundation. Anton also appears here as a child and warns Valentina about Tony: He did not want to do anything good with the foundation, but instead only traded the organs of these children . The horrified spectators of the gala then pursue Tony. The world of the gala dissolves and Anton falls - despite Valentina's saving hand - into an opening abyss. Valentina is walking through Outland when she also thinks her dead drunk father is dead. She ends up meeting Mr. Nick and two wickets. Although Mr. Nick tries to prevent her, Valentina manages to enter the Devil's Gate. With that he has won his fifth soul, even if it was the bet at the same time.

Blackfriars Bridge, where the film was set

As Mr. Nick regrets this turn of events and Dr. Parnassus is looking for his daughter, he offers him a new contract: Actually, he was only after Tony the whole time, but Tony kept getting away from him. If Parnassus manages to get Tony to die, he will get Valentina back. On his escape from the visitors to the gala, Tony reaches a mountain through the desert, climbs the steps leading up to it, and finds a gallows at the top . He plans to swallow his lucky flute again to survive the hanging, but Parnassus succeeds in exchanging the real flute for a fake, fragile one. The crowd hangs on Tony, who is still in his third transformation since stepping into the magic mirror. Mr. Nick releases Valentina and Parnassus in the dark where she is. Years later, after endless searching and in deep despair, Parnassus sees Valentina again in Vancouver. She has now started a family with Anton; the two have a young daughter. He also meets Percy again in Vancouver, who helps Parnassus, who has degenerated into a beggar, back on his feet: Both of them are now selling small paper theaters made of cardboard, in which Doctor Parnassus moves the paper theater characters in advertising.

production

Terry Gilliam at the screening of the film in San Diego

Terry Gilliam began work on the screenplay for The Cabinet of Doctor Parnassus in November 2006 . After Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen , he worked with Charles McKeown as a co-author for the third time . In addition to William Vince and Samuel Hadida, Gilliam also managed to win his daughter Amy Gilliam as a producer, who organized the required $ 30 million for the independent production from various donors. William Vince died of cancer in June 2008 shortly after filming ended; like Heath Ledger, the film is dedicated to him.

Filming of Doctor Parnassus's Cabinet began in London in December 2007, including at Tower Bridge , Southwark Cathedral , Leadenhall Market and Battersea Power Station . The scene with the hanged Tony was taken on Blackfriars Bridge . After filming in London was over, more scenes were filmed in Vancouver , such as the scenes from the charity gala that were shot in the Orpheum in Vancouver. During the team's move from London to Vancouver in January 2008, lead actor Heath Ledger , who last stood in front of the camera on January 19, 2008, died on a stopover in New York City . On January 24, 2008 Terry Gilliam stopped filming the film. After suspecting that the project would not continue, those involved decided to rewrite the script. While the scenes with Heath Ledger were almost finished in the presence of London, those with Ledger behind the magic mirror were missing. It was therefore decided that the Tonys behind the magic mirror would be filled by different actors, who, however, adapted their style and clothing to Heath Ledger's portrayal. The finished film was, according to Gilliam, a summary of everything he had done.

The film's world premiere took place on May 22nd, 2009 at the Cannes Film Festival in France . In Germany, The Cabinet of Doctor Parnassus was released on January 7, 2010.

synchronization

The German synchronization of the film took place at Berliner Synchron . The dialogue book was written by Stephan Hoffmann , who also worked as a dialogue director .

role actor Voice actor
Tony Heath Ledger Simon hunter
Tony (1st transformation) Johnny Depp David Nathan
Tony (2nd transformation) Jude Law Florian Halm
Tony (3rd transformation) Colin Farrell Markus Pfeiffer
Dr. Parnassus Christopher Plummer Lothar Blumhagen
Valentina Lily Cole Anne Helm
Mr. Nick Tom Waits Oliver Stritzel
Percy Verne Troyer Santiago Ziesmer
Anton Andrew Garfield Konrad Bösherz
Sally Paloma Faith Sarah Riedel

Florian Halm is both the regular voice actor Jude Laws and the regular voice actor for Colin Farrell. Despite the fact that both play the same role here, it was decided to assign different voices to all four actors in the German version as well and not to let one narrator take over the role for all four actors. So there was a change in the line-up at Farrell.

criticism

Lily Cole during the screening of the film at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival

Philip French of the British Observer praised The Cabinet of Doctor Parnassus as "visually impressive", but criticized the fact that the film was "intellectually tangled" towards the end and became maudlin.

Empire mentioned the pressure on the film to be special as it represented Ledger's last film appearance. This is not comparable with his portrayals in The Dark Knight or Brokeback Mountain , but this is due to Ledger's not particularly unusual role, who is part of an ensemble here. Empire particularly emphasizedthe portrayal of Lily Cole and Andrew Garfield, which would give the film a down-to-earth note. The film would start out as a “whirlwind of fantasy”, but in the end it would be a bit of a disappointing drizzle, which shouldn't hide the great performance of Gilliam. Despite the death of his main actor, he managed to keep the rewritten film in its basic concept plausible - at least within its surreal world of its own. Precisely because Gilliam did not rewrite the film around Ledger's role after Ledger's death, but instead focused on the entire plot, he succeeded in making his most interesting film in over a decade, which one does not notice that the plot should have been different. The cabinet of Doctor Parnassus is a film with too many ideas to keep them all under control, but it was created out of a passion and determination that is incredibly contagious.

Cinema noted that "Heath Ledger's death while filming in January 2008 [...] was cynically lucky for the film", given that the stopgap solution of casting Tony through various characters was "Terry Gilliam's stroll through a surreal junk shop on The end of the much needed kick [gives ...]. Despite the weaknesses in the story, it is an artistic extravaganza that the cinema seldom has to offer ”. Even movie starts felt the movie "despite obvious weaknesses [...] just for fans of Terry Gilliam worth seeing."

Awards

At the Satellite Awards 2009 , Doctor Parnassus's Cabinet won the award in the “ Best Costume Design ” category . At the 2010 Oscars , the film was nominated for an Oscar in the categories “Best Production Design” and “Best Costume Design”.
