Wilhelm Ernst Winterhager

Wilhelm Ernst Winterhager (born March 28, 1949 in Hohennauen ) is a German historian of modern history.

Wilhelm Ernst Winterhager studied history and English from 1968 to 1973 in Berlin , Marburg and Philadelphia . From 1973 to 1978 he worked as a research assistant for modern history at the Free University of Berlin. In 1978 he began studying Protestant theology in Berlin and Uppsala , which he completed in 1982. He received his doctorate in 1982 with a dissertation on Danish peace mediation and European power politics in the First World War at the Free University of Berlin. From 1983 to 1989 Wilhelm Ernst Winterhager worked as a university assistant for modern history at the Free University of Berlin. In 1993 he received his habilitation in the subject of modern history at the Free University of Berlin with a paper on the political background of the indulgence dispute 1516–1518. He then worked as a senior assistant for modern history at the Free University of Berlin. From 1998 to 2014 Wilhelm Ernst Winterhager held a professorship for modern history with a special focus on the history of the Reformation at the Philipps University of Marburg. He has been a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse since 2002 .
