action

A man explains to the children that he wants to tell them the story of Don the Cockroach . A cockroach named Don once lived in a beautiful castle and spent the day hopping on white bread and walking under the floorboards. One day she was kicked by a man while walking across the floorboards and the narrator states that it doesn't matter, as cockroaches are not particularly interesting anyway. A chain of relationships is created through the man who trampled Don, such as his brother was the friend of a well-employed man. He in turn worked for an accountant who worked for a doctor. He had once treated the sister of a famous boxer, whose greatest admirer was his mother. The mother once had an affair with a plumber who in turn worked for an artist. Its cleaning lady was busy fighting cockroaches. The story of Don begins again, until a voice from the off declares that the narrator has already told all this. A fade-in explains that the movie's animator has been fired and that the next cartoon will be better.

The next film, The Albert Einstein Story , introduces the man Albert Einstein, who is the only person in the world who bears this name besides the famous Albert Einstein . Einstein, on the other hand, is not scientifically active, but has great hands that caress him from time to time. In retrospect, it is shown that his hands used to do their own thing, go out together until late at night and have an affair with one foot, which caused gossip in the fine hands company. At the end, Fred & Frank Feet and Their Dancing Body are announced and men with oversized feet dance on a stage. The End is displayed.

The Christmas Card begins and shows an old man alone for Christmas on December 25, 1968 in a sparsely furnished room in London. Suddenly the door opens and an oversized envelope is pushed into the room. The result is an equally large Christmas card with the inscription Joy to the World , Handel's Hallelujah sounds. The spokesman explains that a Christmas card is what makes Christmas complete. Several Christmas cards are shown with their figures moving. Among other things, the Three Wise Men wander after the star of Bethlehem , small children shoot snowballs at Santa Claus, who in turn steals gifts from crying girls and a hunter shoots the deer peacefully standing in the snow. At the end, there is a fade back into the man's room, who is dancing enthusiastically around the Christmas card. Suddenly the hallelujah ends abruptly and the card is pulled out of the room, indicating that it was wrongly delivered. The man looks puzzled at the camera. The End is displayed.

production

Terry Gilliam made some animated shorts for the television show Do Not Adjust Your Set , including The Christmas Card , which was shown as part of a Do Not Adjust Your Set Christmas special in late 1968 . The Albert Einstein Story and Don the Cockroach may not appear on The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine until 1971 and 1972, respectively . It is therefore controversial when exactly the individual segments were put together to form the overall film Storytime . As a rule, however, 1968 is given as the year of origin. Storytime is therefore considered Terry Gilliam's actual directorial debut.

Storytime ran in 1980 as a supporting film for the British premiere of The Life of Brian and in 2001 on the occasion of the re-release of Gilliam's Jabberwocky in theaters. In November 2009, Storytime was one of three short animated films by Gilliam that were shown as part of a Gilliam special on the program Tracks by ARTE . In 2005 the film appeared on the DVD Le court des grands .

The film takes on in its distinctive style in stop motion , with cut-out animation and collage techniques, the later Python animations z. B. in Monty Python's Flying Circus .
