Michael Longhurst

Michael Longhurst (* 1981 in Bromley , London) is an English theater director and theater director.

life and career

Michael Longhurst studied philosophy at Nottingham University , graduating in 2002, and then took a year-long postgraduate course in theater directing at the Mountview Academy of Theater Arts in London. Although he took on various theater jobs during his studies, he earned his living for a long time with a part-time office job in the City of London.

His successful with the public staging of Adam Braces piece Stovepipe (2009) on HighTi, which was produced in collaboration with the National Theater, was highly praised in the press, was on the shortlist for the George Devine Award and the Sunday Times to the list of the 20 best plays of the decade. Even so, Longhurst could only continue to work as a freelance director. In 2011 he staged the one-person play "Midnight Your Time" with Diana Quick , also by Adam Brace. In 2016 he brought out an opulent new production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus as a musical theater at the Olivier Theater in London . In addition to the actors, six singers and the Southbank Sinfonia with 20 musicians were integrated into the cast and the play on stage. Lucian Msamati played the Salieri , the soprano Fleur de Bray sang and played the role of Caterina Cavalieri . In 2017, the NT produced a DVD of this production in its National Theater Live series.

Michael Lomghurst has succeeded Josie Rourke as Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse in London since March 2019 .
