Alison Louise Balsom OBE (* 7. October 1978 in Royston , County Hertfordshire ) is an English trumpeter .

Live and act

Balsom studied in London with John Miller at the Guildhall School of Music Junior Department, in Paris at the Conservatoire de Paris , where she graduated with the highest distinction in 2001, and with Håkan Hardenberger . She has won numerous trumpet competitions. She became internationally known in 2002 with her debut album Music for Trumpet and Organ . In 2006 her album Caprice received the title "Solo CD of the Year 2006" by Brass Band World magazine . That same year, Alison Balsom was appointed visiting professor of trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama .

From 2009 to 2011 she lived with the British conductor Edward Gardner . The two have a son, Charlie, who was born in the spring of 2010.

She creates her own repertoire both as an arranger and as a client and dedicatee for contemporary trumpet concerts. In 2011 she premiered the Seraph Trumpet Concerto by Scottish composer James MacMillan, which was dedicated to her, and released the first recording in the same year on the album of the same name. Her album Kings & Queens followed in 2012 , for which she recorded works by Handel and Purcell on the natural trumpet .

Her album Paris was created in collaboration with trumpeter and band leader Guy Barker and brought arrangements of French classics and chansons from Satie to Legrand, from Ravel to Messiaen. Her album Jubilo was released in November 2016 , recorded with the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of King's College with works by Fasch , Bach , Torelli and Corelli .

In addition to her busy concert and recording activities, Alison Balsom is also involved in various charity projects , such as “Brass for Africa”, which aims to give African children and young people new self-confidence and hope by making music.

She has been married to director Sam Mendes since 2017 .
