Stan Jones (songwriter)

Stanley Davis Jones (born June 5, 1914 in Douglas , Arizona ; died December 13, 1963 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American songwriter and actor . His best known song is (Ghost) Riders in the Sky .

Live and act

Jones was born in Douglas, Arizona, and his family later moved to Los Angeles . He enrolled at Berkeley University , but dropped out in 1934 and joined the Navy. He later worked in various professions and eventually became a ranger in various national parks in the western United States, where he wrote songs in his spare time.

When he was working in Death Valley National Park in 1948 , he took part in the filming of the western The Walking Hills and performed songs he had written himself during the breaks. Encouraged by the audience, he sent his compositions to several music publishers. His song Ghost Riders in the Sky was then recorded by Burl Ives and a little later made very popular in a version by Vaughn Monroe .

Over the next several years, Jones wrote music for various films (mostly westerns), including Western St. Louis and Rio Grande . He also played a few minor roles, such as in The Last Command or various television series.
